English Kid's Games: Scavenger Hunt

Savannah W

We've all played scavenger hunt at some point! Usually, we have a list, a team, and we race to find all the items. You can easily play this game in your home for English practice, too!

How to play:
1. Call out a color or a shape.
2. Everyone races to find that color or shape in the house.
3. When everyone has the object of that color or shape, take turns describing what it is!
     >For young learners, simply saying the object's name is good.
     >Increase the difficulty by picking a variety of colors or shapes, like "maroon (a deep red)" or "cylinder" (the shape of a pencil or tube).
4. Next person chooses a color or shape and the game starts again!

This is a good way to practice talking about items we use every day. Kids can talk about how to use the object, what it is for, who uses it, and many more descriptions!

At the base of the game, we use colors and shapes, but for more advanced kids, you can use phrases:
  • "Find something Mom uses."
  • "Find something with an E on it."
  • "Find something electronic."

This will expand vocabulary and speaking skills. Learning how to describe things is a great conversation skill for when you are stuck on a word!

Let's try it out!
