Your choice whether we read the book out loud during the lesson or you can read before, then we discuss and go over your questions during the lesson time.
Many books will need more than just this pack of lessons to complete the book, but I think 4 lessons is a good place to start to see if you like it. Much of what I have already is fantasy or science fiction, if you don't see a specific book you would like to read on this list, feel free to reach out and ask. Even the books set in times and places not like reality, the flow of the language and the form of English idioms are familiar to native speakers. Learning how native speakers phrase things in these books can be a fun and relaxing way to get more familiar with the language.
Books aimed at young teen readers (though adults might enjoy them as a quicker read with simpler language)
Circle of Magic books by Tamora Pierce, beginning with Sandry's book. (fantasy stories in a magical world, the narrators are orphaned children)
Books aimed at middle and older teen readers (again, easier reads for busy adults!)
Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith (combined two novels, one where the main character is fighting a war with blades and the second where she is trying at a royal court to get the country to peace. There is magic, but not for much of the book.)
Protector of the Small quartet by Tamora Pierce, starts with the book First Test (set in a world with a lot of magic, the main character is a girl named Kel who sets out to become a knight.)
The Giver by Lois Lowry, a book commonly assigned for reading in school (set in what appears to be utopia, later revealed as a dystopia)
Books aimed at adult readers
The Martian by Andy Weir (was made into a movie, has some complicated science words but most dialogue is how people do actually speak)
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (LGBTQ themes, has been made into a popular tv show on Prime video, comedy that can be hard to translate - I suggest trying to watch the Prime video show to see if you like the comedy)
His Majesty's Dragon: Book One of Temeraire by Naomi Novik (as the title implies, there are dragons. A novel of "what if" there were dragons in the Napoleonic wars.)
The Broken Earth triology by N.K. Jemisin, starts with the book The Fifth Season (dark post apocalypse book set in a world with magic, serious abuse of and death of a child early in the book, some LGBT characters mentioned later - also some sex scenes which we will not read during lesson time)
