Подробности урока

***This class does NOT have a Skype class for discussion. This lesson only includes a detailed proofreading of your summary as well as my suggestions. If you prefer to verbally discuss the TV show and my suggestions together, please sign up for the 50 minute Skype class! :)

Many English teachers put too much emphasis on textbook lesson and fail to teach their students slang words and phrases, but I disagree with this. Slang is very popular in colloquial English (informal, natural English speech). It is common in daily conversations as well as on media sources such as TV, movies, radio, magazines, and even newspapers.

Watching TV and movies is the most difficult for English learners because they are made for native English speakers. The people in these videos speak much faster than your English teachers, use idioms and slang expressions that are very difficult to understand, and some have very strong accents.

"Let's Watch 'Mad Men'" is a class for students who want to avoid embarrassing situations where slang may be misunderstood or used incorrectly. Plus, you get to watch a great TV show! (Please see a description of the show below.)

In this lesson, I will send you a video file with an episode of "Mad Men." Each video will be about 45 minutes long. These videos DO NOT HAVE SUBTITLES, so.....I ask that you watch the video 2-3 times. Listen and watch the characters' facial expressions and body language, too.

Then, write a summary (500 words or less) about the episode. Don't get frustrated if you cannot understand everything. Understanding the main idea is the most important part. Also, write down anything you have trouble understanding: vocabulary, expressions, idioms, etc. When I receive your summary, I will first review it for understanding and then again for proofreading. I will also suggest a few slang expressions, idioms, or vocabulary that I think are important for an English learner to know.

Just try your best, and enjoy the show!

Mad Men is an American drama series on television. Mad Men is set in the 1960s at the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency in New York City. The plot of Mad Men focuses on the business of the advertising agency as well as the personal lives of the characters, and often shows the changing moods and social problems of the United States in the 1960s (i.e., issues with privacy, smoking, drinking, women's rights, racial prejudice, prescriptions for depression, etc.). The main character is named Don Draper. Draper is a partner at the advertising agency, but he has a troubled past. This may be why he is always unsatisfied with his home life and takes many lovers in the city. Peggy Olson is another lead character. Peggy climbs up the ladder (gets promoted) from secretary to a junior writer!
