"It's Pride Month, when we celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community! It happens in June, to honor the start of the modern gay rights movement. The movement was sparked by the Stonewall Uprising, in June of 1969. The Stonewall Inn, a popular LGBTQ+ hangout on Christopher Street in New York City, was raided by police, triggering protests. The Christopher Street Liberation March was held one year later, and has evolved into the annual Pride parades held around the world. 2020 marked the 50th anniversary of the first march, so Nat interviewed co-founder Ellen Broidy about its origins and legacy. They discussed how Pride 2020 would be be different because of the coronavirus, how kids can be good allies to their LGBTQ peers, and parallels between 2020's Black Lives Matter demonstrations and the Stonewall Uprising. Photos of the Christopher Street Liberation March come courtesy of the Diana Davies collection in the New York Public Library’s digital archive."
