My Writing and Reading Journey

Ishan Mainali

I have a blog. In the blog, I write short fictional stories of around 500 words. I mostly write in English but I also write in Nepali.

Writing is a great way to improve one's language ability. While I think I am good at both English and Nepali, there are always vocabulary that one is not familiar with. Writing helps improve one's vocabulary. It also helps one convey their message in a more succint manner.

One way to be a better writer is to read a lot of books. The words that one uses when writing comes from words that they listen to or read about. Reading a lot of books introduces you with a lot of new words, and it also helps you think about your own style of writing. That is why in 2020 I have planned to read 30 books, and I have already read more than 25 already.

In my vocabulary class at Cafetalk, I make the learner read simple stories of their comfort level. We then go over new words or phrases that they do not know about. This way, they are enjoying the story and learning about the country's reading culture, while also learning new words and phrases.

If you are reading this right now - go pick a book or find a short story! Happy reading! :)
