Weekly Topic: Must-have Items to Bring for Studying Abroad!

Andrew Teacher

So how what should we bring if we plan to study abroad? There are a few physical and a few mental things.

I spoke with a well-travelled student of mine, who said with a passport and a credit card, she could travel anywhere. So to travel anywhere we need our Identification (passport) and money (credit card).

But what else do we need if we are a student? What do we want from the experience? Some people want the freedom of escaping the pressures of their own society, and live in a country where the same expectations don't apply. Sometimes time spent overseas helps them appreciate their country more, while for for others there's no looking back.

Other people desperately want to become fluent speakers of a language within a couple of months to a year. They study consistently, make international friends, sometimes live with a family that speaks English, and sometimes work in a job where they need to speak it. Many of these students are amazed at how well they can communicate, compared to only a few months before.

I think above all else International students need an open mind for new experiences and a forward looking and optimistic attitude. Learning new things from study and experience is a positive force that makes us better versions of ourselves. When the learning is pleasurable, ability is not far away.
