I have recently re-watched a movie made in 2006. The name of the movie is Idiocracy. It was written and directed by Mike Judge who is famous for a TV show called Beavis and Butthead. He had also written and directed two other well known comedies, Airheads and Office Space.
The story of Idiocracy is about an average intelligent man and woman. These two are placed in a military experiment. The experiment is to put two people to sleep for one year and then wake them up. The experiment goes wrong and they accidentally wake up hundreds of years later. In Mike Judge’s imagination of the future all the people have become dumber.
Instead of pushing themselves to be better the population of America becomes more interested in childishness. The entertainment becomes less intellectual. Advertisements are placed everywhere to push people to consume more and think less. Technology becomes simpler for people to use. Robots take care of everything for people.
It was a very funny movie. It was also a good question for people to ask ourselves. Can this become us? The big thing Mike Judge really missed in the movie was social media. It would have been nice to see him explore and think about what social media will do with our intelligence, but maybe someday there will be a Idiocracy 2.
