Japanese Tea Ceremony

Weekly Topic: What is your main hobby?

Laura P

I have studied Urasenke tea ceremony for about one year.

I decided to learn tea ceremony for three main reasons: I love tea, I think Japan's tea culture is really beautiful, and I currently live in one of Japan's top three tea culture cities (Matsue).

For me, the most difficult part of studying tea ceremony has been sitting in seiza (sitting on my knees). I didn't do this much before I started tea ceremony lessons, so my legs really hurt when I first started! My sensei has been very kind during lessons, though, and always tells me to be gentle with myself while sitting in seiza. Now, about one year after starting lessons, I can sit in seiza more comfortably (although my legs still fall asleep easily).

My favorite thing about tea ceremony is creating a unique experience. By memorizing the movements and choosing materials, decorations, and sweets that suit the season, I can create a relaxing a beautiful space for people.

I hope that one day I can learn tea ceremony well enough to teach it. In the meantime, I'll work hard to understand everything I need to!
