Today I’d like to share two Christmas movies that are fairly new (they came out within the last 5 years) that I keep going back to year after year.
The first one is The Christmas Chronicles, which is a 2018 live action movie starring Kurt Russell as Santa in a (somewhat common) story about Santa losing his magical powers because Christmas spirit around the world is so low. Of course, Santa needs help from a couple of kids who are “true believers,” and together they go on an adventure to save Christmas! This is a feel-good family movie that has a 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s worth seeing for Kurt Russell’s portrayal of a cool Santa. Russell used to star in a lot of tough-guy action movie roles, but he has aged into the role of Santa perfectly. A highlight of the movie is his musical jail scene. There is a sequel, The Christmas Chronicles 2, which came out in 2020, but the original is still the best.
The other one is Klaus, a 2019 animated film that has won many awards and has a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s the story of a reluctant postman who ends up teaming up with a woodsman named Klaus to bring peace to a village by delivering toys to the local children, creating the holiday and traditions of Christmas in the process. In addition to being beautifully animated and darkly humorous, it’s actually quite an emotional story and can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. I highly recommend checking it out!
