My 2023 in the rearview mirror

Zach McLaughlin

My biggest achievement of 2023 was finally visiting Nova Scotia for the first time in my life. In June, I flew out to spend a week with a retired ex-coworker of mine and we explored Halifax, Lunenburg, and the surrounding countryside. It was my first time to hear the ocean waves crashing against the shore.

The thing that I failed to achieve this year was reading enough. For some reason, I just stopped reading books this year and only read news and articles online, but I plan to make up for it next year and I picked up five books over the Christmas holiday to get me started in 2024! I’m starting with a book about Viking history, and when that’s done, I think I’ll move on to “The Wager” (a tale of shipwreck, mutiny, and murder)!

A new experience for me this year was doing archaeological illustrations for a book. I used to be an illustrator, but it had been a very long time since I’d drawn anything. This year I had a chance to get back into it and do some pen drawings of Native American buildings. I may even continue this work next year, illustrating some artifacts for the same book.

My worst experience this year was almost the same as last year’s! Although I didn’t get Covid this year, I did get two nasty back-to-back colds in November and December, and I’m still not completely over the most recent one. In fact, my whole family was sick this Christmas!

One of my best memories from 2023 was returning to Upper Canada Village on Boxing Day to see the seasonal light show. Upper Canada Village is a recreation of an 1860s Canadian village, with all the old buildings and crafts from that time. My parents used to work there when I was very young, but I hadn’t been there in over 30 years!

Finally, my favourite movie of 2023 was probably Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which was a huge surprise because Dungeons and Dragons movies have been absolutely terrible in the past, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Some of the other new movies I watched this year include Barbie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, A Haunting in Venice, and Elemental.

That’s it for 2023! Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and all the best for 2024!
