This course is designed to guide students step-by-step through the essential components of academic essay writing. Over a series of lessons, students will gain a solid foundation in structuring essays, developing arguments, and presenting their ideas clearly and logically. By the end of the course, students will be able to independently brainstorm, outline, and write well-structured essays with confidence.

Skills and Topics Covered:

  • Understanding essay structure and key components
  • Breaking down a thesis and constructing strong arguments
  • Developing topic sentences and supporting evidence
  • Organizing ideas into clear, logical body paragraphs
  • Writing introductions and conclusions that enhance the overall argument
  • Effective brainstorming and planning techniques
  • Drafting and revising essays for clarity and coherence
  • Practicing time management for academic essay writing

Methodology and Teaching Style:
I use an interactive, example-driven teaching approach, allowing students to first observe and then actively practice the skills. Each session will start with a brief discussion or a question to gauge the student’s understanding, followed by a lesson on key techniques and concepts. We’ll explore examples together, analyze structure, and build essays from the ground up. Throughout the course, students will engage in guided exercises and collaborative writing to reinforce each skill.

Lesson Structure:

Lesson 1: Introduction to Essay Structure and Components

  • Objective: Familiarize students with the main parts of an essay and their roles.
  • Activity: Begin with a discussion on what students believe makes a strong essay. Review the components of an essay (introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion).
  • Practice: Together, we’ll look at examples of each component and discuss what makes them effective.

Lesson 2: Planning and Drafting an Introduction

  • Objective: Teach students the importance of a rough draft and a strong introduction.
  • Activity: Discuss how to brainstorm ideas, organize thoughts, and outline a draft. We’ll focus on crafting a clear thesis statement and introducing the topic effectively.
  • Practice: Students will create a rough draft outline for an essay and practice writing an introductory paragraph.

Lesson 3: Body Paragraphs and Topic Sentences

  • Objective: Help students build coherent body paragraphs that support their thesis.
  • Activity: Teach how to divide arguments logically across paragraphs, use topic sentences effectively, and incorporate supporting evidence.
  • Practice: Students will outline and write body paragraphs, practicing transitions between ideas for smooth flow.

Lesson 4: Conclusions and Final Essay Construction

  • Objective: Reinforce what we’ve learned by constructing a full essay.
  • Activity: Review key points from previous lessons, focusing on crafting a compelling conclusion.
  • Practice: Together, we’ll choose a topic and outline a complete essay, with the student constructing each part as we review, discuss, and refine their work.
