Description

Dear Cafetalk Community,

Thank you for your interest and for stopping by my "Reading Lesson: Mystery Books" webpage! I hope you're doing well!

[Lesson Purpose]
I would like to transport you to another land, another place, another time. . . Reading in English not only provides you with wisdom and knowledge about the story in English but includes the thrill and joy of using your imagination!

It's also fun to read out loud! You can use the enjoyable skill of reading to improve your English knowledge, vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension.

[Method 1: Shadowing]
If you would like me to, I will read the sentence aloud first and you can shadow me. If you would like to hear a native speaker's pronunciation and learn the intonation of how the sentences should sound, this method is suitable for you.

[Method 2: Read Alone]
On the other hand, if you already feel comfortable reading out loud, you are more than welcome to read aloud by yourself. Also, if you are intermediate or above and you feel confident enough reading alone, this method is suitable for you.

*Please let me know which method you prefer at the time of the lesson.
-----------------------------------------------------------

[Lesson Structure:]

First, you will read one chapter from the book out loud (alone or shadowing). Then, after each chapter, I will ask you a series of questions to check your reading comprehension before we move on. If you'd like, we can discuss the contents of each chapter as well.
-------------------------------------------------------------

[Length of each lesson: 50 minutes] *Note: If 50-minutes is too long for you, please let me know before you sign up for this lesson. The 30-minute lesson is 1,200 points.

[How Long Will It Take You To Finish Reading The Book?]

I wish I could tell you exactly how long it will take for you to finish reading the book. Obviously, some of the reasons why I can't give you an exact timeframe is because each book has different page numbers. In addition, the other variable is how fast you can read. I want you to read at your own pace, but the problem is that everyone reads at different speeds. That variance makes it impossible for me to predict exactly how many lessons you will need to take.

As a result, instead of making this a Value Pack (with a limited amount of lessons,) I wanted you to take your lessons at your convenience. You can take your time and read at your own leisurely pace. On the other hand, perhaps you are a speedy reader and you'd like to finish as quickly as possible. The lesson plan is flexible, and you can take as many lessons as necessary to finish the book!

[*Note:] Having said that, I would appreciate it if you can take this lesson seriously and try to make a commitment to reading the book until the end. If you don't like the book you , please let me know, and I will be happy to provide an alternative choice.

I would like to show you the book options below. Please let me know which book sounds the most interesting to you! I've provided brief summaries below based on "Good Reads."

[Book ions: For anyone who can read English at any level:]

1.) Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (Pages 130)
[Summary]
Rebecca is a 1938 Gothic novel written by English author Daphne du Maurier. The novel depicts an unnamed young woman who impetuously marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character.

2.)
Holes by Louis Sachar (Pg. 272)
[Summary]

Stanley Yelnats, a boy who has bad luck due to a curse placed on his great-great-grandfather, is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp, for a crime he did not commit. Stanley and the other boys at the camp are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day. Stanley eventually realizes that they are digging these holes because the Warden is searching for something. As Stanley continues to dig holes and meet the other boys at the camp, the narrator intertwines three separate stories to reveal why Stanley's family has a curse and what the Warden is looking for.

3.) And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (Pages 272)

Seven guests, a newly hired secretary and two staff are gathered at a manor house on an isolated island by an unknown absentee host and are killed off one-by-one. They work together to determine who the killer is before it's too late.

[Mystery for "Intermediate to Advanced" Readers:]

1.) The Human Chair by Edogawa Ranpo - (Pages - 40)
[Summary]
In "The Human Chair," a writer gets a manuscript sent to her home. The manuscript is written by a craftsman who describes himself as irredeemably ugly--shades of Dostoevsky's, "I am a sick man . . ."--but despite his ugliness, he has a true passion in his heart. He had some skill as a cabinet maker, which turns into making luxury items, and he enjoys making chairs and then sitting in them and then imagining all the wonderful places his craft may show up.
