Hello! My name's Paul (ポール). I'm a native English teacher from the UK. It's nice to meet you!
Let me introduce myself...
About me
I grew up in the beautiful countryside of South West England, near Stonehenge, Glastonbury and Cornwall. I also spent a lot of my childhood in the beautiful Highlands and Islands of Scotland, where my great-grandparents were born. I love the Celtic music, stories and myths of these places and I would be happy to share them with you!
I also love Japanese culture and I have been very lucky to live, travel and teach English in many different prefectures of Japan. I have been an English teacher at universities in Tokyo and Kanagawa, and now I teach Japanese university students online. My favourite town in Japan is Yoshino, which has over 30,000 cherry blossom trees! (桜)
Right now I live in Catalonia, a beautiful, sunny region of the Mediterranean between Spain and France. Here I can enjoy some of my favourite hobbies: spending time in nature, growing vegetables, hiking in the mountains, and of course drinking tea, especially Japanese green tea! My favourite variety is Sencha (煎茶) from Shizuoka.
About my classes
I have been teaching, tutoring and coaching language learners around the world for over 10 years:
* I am a Cambridge certified English teacher (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults).
* I am also a freelance proofreader, editor and academic tutor qualified in the humanities and social sciences (Master of Science in Social Anthropology).
* I speak English, Catalan and Spanish fluently. I am also learning French and Japanese. My experiences as a language learner continuously help me to refine more effective methods for my own students.
* In London and Oxford (UK) I have taught children, adults and retired students of all ages and levels, in private language schools and on university and exam preparation courses.
* In Barcelona and Cantabria (Spain) I have taught in-company business English to managers and other professionals, and helped to design curriculums for nature-based learning and inter-cultural exchange programs.
* In Tokyo and Kanagawa (Japan) I have taught university students on accredited language programs, and coached English pronunciation and presentation skills. I have also been a language consultant for university professors developing academic courses in English.
You can choose 3 different types of English lesson with me on Cafetalk:
A) General English: Speaking, Listening, Reading & Writing
We practice the 4 key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in our general English lessons. I also recommend trying a session of "pronunciation coaching" to improve clarity and fluency, or a "debate!" lesson (ディベート!) to have fun and build confidence in expressing your opinions!
B) Academic English
Our academic English lessons are for student or teachers who want to improve their abilities in any of the following activities: presentations, powerpoints, public speaking, debates, college entrance and job interviews. At university I studied philosophy (哲学) and I am also a researcher and tutor of anthropology (人類学) - the science of human societies and cultures - so please consider a session of academic tutoring if this is your major or if you need help with similar subjects!
C) Free talk
Relax and enjoy a natural conversation with a native English speaker! Making regular time for even a few minutes of speaking practice is the best way to make real progress. You can choose the topic or I can give you some ideas when we begin. Every lesson ends with some specific feedback and advice from me about how to improve your grammar or increase your vocabulary and fluency.
>> Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or special lesson requests! You are welcome to propose your own lesson topic, theme or skill that you want to practise. <<
