Hi! My name is Mai and I’m from Iwate, Japan. I live in Yokohama with my husband, he is from the UK.

I love traveling, singing, and playing different types of musical instruments. 

In 2019, I taught Japanese and Japanese culture at a senior high school in Taiwan which inspired me to start teaching Japanese online.

My main role in Taiwan was a conversation partner for the senior high school students. Not only did I teach conversation, but I also introduced Japanese culture and made learning fun.

My husband and I always talk in English and so I’m used to speaking in English on a daily basis, so please don’t worry, I can help you using English/Chinese when you don't understand Japanese.


I use my cute and fun original teaching materials designed for lots of speaking practice, you will have plenty of opportunities to speak Japanese! Whether you are a beginner or intermediate, you can expect immediate results! 

 
◆ My teaching style and selling points ◆ 
 
1. Indirect method

I teach using the ‘indirect method’, so I can teach you Japanese using English! A lot of Japanese teachers only use the ‘direct method’, so they teach you Japanese only in Japanese. And I appreciate that the ‘direct method’ is not for everyone. I want my students to feel comfortable learning Japanese. 


2. Focusing on speaking

In my lessons, the first 5-10 minutes are spent chatting, then 5-10 minutes explaining grammar, and the rest is speaking practice!
(After the lesson, I will send you a PDF of the study materials, so even if you forget any grammar or vocabulary, you can review it later!)
 
I will explain grammar thoroughly to students who are complete beginners, but I usually spend a lot of time on speaking. 
 
My original teaching materials use a lot of cute illustrations, and you will practice describing the illustrations using the grammar you have learned. I usually support my instructions and examples with both English and Japanese, so don't worry.


3. Immediate results

After about five lessons with me, you will be able to have simple conversations using adjectives. After ten lessons, you will be able to use verbs, so your conversation skills will improve dramatically. If you take lessons twice a week, you will gradually be able to speak Japanese in about a month.


4. Also useful for JLPT preparation

You might think that speaking practice is unnecessary since there is no speaking section in the JLPT. However, speaking practice is highly recommended for those who are taking the JLPT.
Even if you can understand grammar points when you study at your desk, you often don't understand when you try to speak. 
I also think many students are studying using apps. They are very useful for learning new grammar that you are unfamiliar with, but to become fluent in Japanese, practicing with the right tutor is essential.
