Discussion with a Professor: How Stoic philosophers become at home in the world

Description

In the ancient world, oikeiôsis, which means something like becoming at home in the world, was the Stoic ideal.  With a modern resurgence of interest in Stoicism, this complex concept has garnered renewed attention.  Philosophers like Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus try to tell us how understanding and accepting the world as it is leads to having a peaceful soul even in the face of crisis or disaster.

I have been a philosophy professor for decades, and my students always love discussing ideas with me after class.  In this lesson, I will give you a short primer on the concept of oikeiôsis, and how it can apply in the modern world, and then happily respond to your questions and thoughts about this brilliant concept from the ancient Greek and Roman world, a friendly English-language discussion of philosophy.

A background in philosophy is not necessary--just an interest in becoming a better thinker about complex things, and in having an English-language discussion about philosophical ideas.
